Best Long-Term Performance Miscellaneous Sector ETFs 1.1

What exactly is a Miscellaneous Sector ETF? Morningstar defines this category as: “Miscellaneous sector portfolios invest in specific sectors that do not fit into any of Morningstar’s existing sector categories and for which not enough funds exist to merit the creation of a separate category.” ETFs that fit into this category contain companies that deal with Clean Energy, Water, Progressive Energy, Clean Technology, Alternative Energy, Uranium & Nuclear Energy, Coal and Solar Energy. The oldest ETF in the Miscellaneous Sector category is the PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy Portfolio (PBW). The newest and most heavily traded ETF that I researched for this article is the PowerShares – Guggenheim Solar ETF (TAN).

OPEC Production Is Headed Lower, Not Higher (XLE)

Summary:

  • OPEC production compliance averages 106% since the start according to IEA.
  • Angola’s oil exports hit 10-year lows. This is structural, and not temporary.
  • Alongside accelerating production declines in Venezuela, years of low oil prices are starting to reveal the impact of what happens when you massively cut CapEx.
  • Again, we reiterate – this is not a production cut, but a pullback from max production capacity.

Continuing To Trim Fat Off Our Energy Equities (PXI) 1-3-2018

We are continuing to trim fat from our Energy Equities. We remain invested in the PowerShares DWA Energy Momentum Portfolio (PXI : $PXI.) Price paid $36.15. Price sold $40.68.

For those who are new to the Deep Value ETF Accumulator website, you may be wondering why we are selling shares of PXI instead of XLE, which is listed on the daily list. Well, the reason behind that is, I could not decide between XLE & PXI when I was accumulating shares, so we accumulated both. For now, we are going to continue holding both, but eventually we will divest from one or the other, but not both.

Trimmed Some Fat Off Our Energy Equities Today (PXI) 12-26-17

We began trimming some fat off our Energy Equities today. I don’t foresee any problems in this industry; we’re just trimming some profits to move to another out-of-favor sector of the market. We still believe the PowerShares DWA Energy Momentum Portfolio (PXI : $PXI) is a good investment. Price paid $36.15. Price sold $39.56.

XLE Breakout – Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEARCA:XLE) | Seeking Alpha

Summary

  • XLE has broken out of a downtrend that began in late 2016.
  • With crude oil potentially breaking out of its downtrend, the upside for XLE could be substantial.
  • I see XLE as relatively undervalued to crude oil, and plan to remain long if crude oil confirms its upward move.

Is It Finally Time To Invest In Energy? (XLE)

Beaten-down sectors provide opportunity

The S&P 500 Index is up about 10% so far this year, but the energy sector is off over 19%.1 Yet, my team believes conditions are ripe for a turnaround in energy.

  • Exploration, production and service company valuations are near historic lows based on our analysis, trading at a price-to-book (P/B) multiple of 0.55. This compares with an average P/B of 0.88 for the sector using data all the way back to 1952.2
  • Many energy companies are currently what we call “under-earners.” In good times, these firms can be cash-generating machines, but the long stretch of low energy prices has resulted in layoffs, dividend cuts, fewer stock buybacks and expense reductions. Once prices rebound a bit and stick, these companies should be even better positioned for growth, in our view.
  • The sector is clearly out of favor and has been for some time. We believe investors are always wise to consider sentiment, but should then dig a little deeper and analyze the trends and facts.
  • After the long period of underperformance, many funds (understandably) lightened up on energy shares and are now underweight.3 At some point, this trend will reverse, and demand for these shares should increase. Also, many investors have taken short positions in energy stocks, and they will have to buy shares in order to settle these positions.
  • Last, energy company capital expenditures (CapEx) are at historically unsustainable levels relative to cash flow.
