With Consumer Staples, Equal-Weight ETFs Boast Some Advantages $RHS

The equal-weight methodology isn’t just for broad market indices. Invesco boasts a broad lineup of equal-weight sector exchange traded funds, including the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Consumer Staples ETF (RHS).

While the consumer staples sector is typically viewed as defensive and prized for above-average dividend yields, by not being heavily allocated to just a handful of stocks, RHS offers investors the potential to unlock a refreshed view of the normally stodgy sector.

Best Long-Term Performance Consumer Staples (Defensive) ETFs 1.2

  • The oldest available Consumer Staples ETF has nearly matched the return of an S&P 500 index fund over the last 19 years.
  • Consumer Staples funds tend to have low correlation to broad U.S. Market funds, making a Consumer Staples ETF an excellent diversifier in a worldwide equity portfolio
  • Morningstar has identified 16 ETFs as Consumer Defensive funds. Eight of these funds are 10 years old or older

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR® Fund (XLP) is the oldest available consumer defensive ETF. The inception date for this fund is December 16, 1998. Since that time, this fund has nearly matched the returns of an S&P 500 index fund. While that is not very impressive, it is noteworthy that this fund has a very low correlation to the overall U.S. Markets and it has been less volatile than an S&P 500 index fund.

Took Some Profits In Our Consumer Staples Equities Today (RHS) 10-11-18

This is a non-traditional sell for the Deep Value ETF Accumulator. A couple weeks ago (9/27/18), I had decided that I would migrate funds that are in my TDA brokerage account to my M1 Finance brokerage account. I had a little more than a 6% profit showing in RHS at that time, so I set a 3% trailing stop limit order. The 3% trailing stop was tripped today. I still believe that the Invesco S&P 500® Equal Weight Consumer Staples ETF (RHS) is a great fund and we will continue to invest in it through our TDA IRAs and in our M1 Finance brokerage account.  Read why we invest in RHS right here: Best Long-Term Performance Consumer Defensive (Staples) ETFs.  Price paid $121.79. Price sold $125.87.
