Closed a Position in Our China / India ETF (FNI) 5-7-19

Today, we closed one of our positions in the First Trust Chindia ETF (FNI). I don’t foresee any problem holding this ETF long-term. This position was only closed to facilitate moving money from our TD Ameritrade brokerage account to our M1 Finance brokerage account. We are continuing to invest in FNI in both our TD Ameritrade IRAs and our M1 Finance brokerage account. HOW WE PREFER TO CLOSE A POSITION IN AN ETF:

  • On 3/20/19 we were approaching a 10% profit in this position
  • On 3/20/19 I set a 5% trailing stop contingent order to be triggered when we hit a 10% profit
  • On 4/5/19 this order was triggered at a price of $38.39
  • On 5/7/19 FNI fell in price sharply and our 5% trailing stop found a buyer at $36.63
  • We netted 4.95% after the sale was completed (not including dividends received during ownership)

Trimmed Some Profits In Our Real Estate Equities Today (REZ) 11-28-18

Today we trimmed some profits in our Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) holdings. I don’t see any problems with continuing to invest in REITs at this time; this sell was simply part of our tactical rebalancing process. Price paid $61.56. Price sold $66.02.

Took Some Profits In Our Consumer Staples Equities Today (RHS) 10-11-18

This is a non-traditional sell for the Deep Value ETF Accumulator. A couple weeks ago (9/27/18), I had decided that I would migrate funds that are in my TDA brokerage account to my M1 Finance brokerage account. I had a little more than a 6% profit showing in RHS at that time, so I set a 3% trailing stop limit order. The 3% trailing stop was tripped today. I still believe that the Invesco S&P 500® Equal Weight Consumer Staples ETF (RHS) is a great fund and we will continue to invest in it through our TDA IRAs and in our M1 Finance brokerage account.  Read why we invest in RHS right here: Best Long-Term Performance Consumer Defensive (Staples) ETFs.  Price paid $121.79. Closed Our Position In The Energy ETF (PXI) 5-23-18

We closed our position in the PowerShares DWA Energy Momentum Portfolio (PXI) today. I don’t foresee any problems with this ETF; we’ve just decided that we would only own one Energy equity ETF. We have chosen to keep our holdings in XLE and let go of these shares of PXI. Both are equally good, but very different Energy ETFs. Price paid $36.15. Price sold $44.26.
