Know What You Own! ETF Deathwatch for April 2021

The ETF Deathwatch shrank in April. Sixteen exchange-traded products (“ETPs”) were added to the list, and 20 were removed.

All of the removals were due to increased health. This is no surprise given the strong performance of the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in April.

All of the additions were due to low average daily volume for the past three months, which could be due to the nature of each ETP’s investment product. These ETPs may have enough assets under management (“AUM”) to keep them from closure. However, our system takes into account both AUM and volume. If both remain low, these funds may be considered for closure.

FGD: One Of The Most Financials-Heavy Dividend Funds

Summary

  • 4.3% yielding FGD provides exposure to the universe of predominantly large- and mid-size dividend payers from the developed world including the U.S.
  • FGD uses the Dow Jones Global Select Dividend Index as a benchmark. Its closest peer is IDV that tracks the Dow Jones EPAC Select Dividend Index.
  • The fund is long 98 stocks, ten of which account for just 16.4% of the net assets.
  • Over 47% of its net assets were in financial stocks as of May 18. The weight of players from the communication services is not even near close to it: it’s only north of 11%.
  • FGD might be considered both as a tactical holding to benefit from the global economic recovery and a long-term dividend-oriented investment. But the elevated expense ratio of 0.57% can be a deal-breaker.

Water ETFs: $111 Billion For Water Infrastructure $FIW

Summary

  • The Biden jobs bill has $111 billion for water infrastructure. An ETF is a good way to play this without a lot of investment in time.
  • There are a wide range of companies that will benefit, mostly large industrials with relatively small water units. There are a few water pure-plays.
  • Despite some problems with bad inclusions, I prefer FIW right now because of its flatter weighting structure.
  • I will follow up on individual companies, and eventually put together a jobs bill portfolio.

Additionally, all but 12 of the 29 ETFs researched in this article failed to outperform a non-leveraged S&P 500 index fund; meaning that most of these products are simply not worth the risk of holding them for longer than a day or so. They are intended to be used as trading vehicles, not investment vehicles. Buyer beware!
