Of the removals, eight were removed due to improved health and 10 were due to asset managers closing their funds. Know What You Own: ETF Deathwatch for July 2018

For the month of July, the ETF Deathwatch list increased with the addition of 20 exchange-traded products (ETPs) and the removal of 14. Of the removals, only three were due to asset managers closing their funds, while the remaining 11 were removed due to increased health. There were no major purges of funds this month, as we’ve seen in the past. Summer is typically a relatively quiet season for the financial-services industry. The three funds that were closed were ETFs, and only one addition was an ETN. This is a typical profile between ETFs and ETNs, so there’s no major takeaway as to market appetites for risk this month.

Know What You Own, ETF Deathwatch for January 2018

“ETF Deathwatch for January had 12 additions and 22 exits. All of the funds exiting the Deathwatch list were due to improved health. The membership tally decreased to 444. None of the funds added to the list were ETNs this month, and only one ETN left the list this month. All other removals and additions were ETFs. The lack of ETNs (typically more financially creative products) in the additions indicates a market appetite for more risk for these financially creative products.”
