Know What You Own. ETF Deathwatch for June 2018

“From the beginning of June to July 1, 2018, the ETF Deathwatch had 26 additions, 10 closures, and 6 exits. The funds that left the list exited due to improved health, mainly from an increase in assets under management (AUM). Ten funds were closed by their parent companies. All of the additions to the list were ETFs. Seven ETNs left the list. This indicates an increased appetite for risk.

The majority of new additions to the list recently came out of our six-month grace period for new funds. These ETFs may still attract attention and momentum from investors with time. None of the new additions are older than 5 years, which means established products seem to be doing well. The only additions that may be concerning are O’Shares FTSE US Quality Dividend ETF (OUSA), O’Shares FTSE Asia Quality Dividend ETF (OASI), and O’Shares FTSE Europe Quality Dividend ETF (OEUR). Each is almost 3 years old.”

Know What You Own! ETF Deathwatch for May 2018

ETF Deathwatch for May had 62 additions, 16 exits due to improved health, and 52 closures. Our suspicion is that first-quarter market volatility and ETN failures led many fund managers to reassess the risk of their entire lines, leading to a large number of closures.

Of the exits, 38 were ETNs and 10 were ETFs. The exit of more ETNs may signify that fund families are reconsidering the profitability and risks of their fund lineups.

Know What You Own: ETF Deathwatch for December 2017

“ETF Deathwatch for December had 15 additions and 18 exits. The membership tally decreased to 454. Slightly less than half of the funds exiting the Deathwatch list were due to improved health. Ten funds on the list closed during December. Only one of those was an ETN. Only two of the funds added to the list were ETNs, iPath Pure Beta Cocoa ETN (CHOC) and JP Morgan Cushing 30 MLP Index ETNS (PPLN). All other removals and additions were ETFs. The presence of so few ETNs (typically more financially creative products) among the closures and additions indicates a more conservative market.”
