Know What You Own! ETF Deathwatch for May 2021

The ETF Deathwatch list remained the same size in May. Twenty-two exchange-traded products (“ETPs”) were added and 22 were removed.

Twenty-one of the products removed were due to improved health. One was delisted.

Two of the products that were added to the list in May were due to low assets under management (“AUM”). The other 20 were due to low trading volume. The low volume in these products could be due to the nature of their investment product. These ETPs may have enough AUM to keep them from closure. However, our system takes into account both AUM and volume. If both remain low, these funds may be considered for closure.

Know What You Own! ETF Deathwatch for April 2021

The ETF Deathwatch shrank in April. Sixteen exchange-traded products (“ETPs”) were added to the list, and 20 were removed.

All of the removals were due to increased health. This is no surprise given the strong performance of the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in April.

All of the additions were due to low average daily volume for the past three months, which could be due to the nature of each ETP’s investment product. These ETPs may have enough assets under management (“AUM”) to keep them from closure. However, our system takes into account both AUM and volume. If both remain low, these funds may be considered for closure.

WHAT IS AN ETF? THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS

by Will Hershey / July 22, 2019

Over the past decade, ETFs have surged in popularity. In the U.S. alone, there are now more than 2,200 ETFs, with combined assets under management of $4 trillion (that’s trillion, with a T). In a 2019 survey by Charles Schwab, 79% of investors said that ETFs were their preferred investment vehicle and 63% responded that they saw ETFs as their primary investment vehicle moving forward. For younger investors, the appetite and interest in ETFs is even more pronounced. A remarkable 90% of millennial respondents, aged 25 to 38, reported ETFs as their investment vehicle of choice.

Capital Flows to Where it is Treated Best: ETFs Have Treated Investors Most Excellently (repost)

“Capital flows to where it is treated best.” Many of you have probably heard this quote more than once, and should easily understand it, even if you don’t embrace it as a universal truth. I like this quote because it just makes good common sense. The quote is normally used in the context of macro-economics, but I believe it is equally valid in the realm of actively managed mutual funds, index funds and ETFs.

Know What You Own, ETF Deathwatch for January 2018

“ETF Deathwatch for January had 12 additions and 22 exits. All of the funds exiting the Deathwatch list were due to improved health. The membership tally decreased to 444. None of the funds added to the list were ETNs this month, and only one ETN left the list this month. All other removals and additions were ETFs. The lack of ETNs (typically more financially creative products) in the additions indicates a market appetite for more risk for these financially creative products.”

ETFs were born 25 years ago; Wall Street was never the same

“The first modern exchange-traded fund (ETF), the Spider, debuted on the American Stock Exchange — now part of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) — 25 years ago. This milestone for ETFs is the embodiment of the most impactful development to hit the markets in almost nine decades.”

H1 – 2017 Performance Report – The Deep Value ETF Accumulator

I have had more than a few people ask me what is the performance of The Deep Value ETF Accumulator. I haven’t had a good answer because I don’t track it and it isn’t necessarily my primary goal. My primary goal is to build a very large portfolio of ETFs from all the great performing sectors of the market that I can find. Secondary to that is performance; which I do strive for by buying these ETFs at the best prices I can get.

Swedroe: The Only Reliable Prediction

Another great article from Mr. Swedroe right here at ETF.com:

Swedroe: The Only Reliable Prediction

Fortune teller

New favorite Swedroe quote: “There’s one forecast I know I can make with the same certainty I have about the sun rising in the east. I know—for certain—that, at the end of each year, active managers will come up with an excuse for their failure to outperform index funds.”

Shark Tank’s O’Leary On ETF Investing

Great interview here with Mr. O’Leary. I am always 90% to 100% invested, so I really liked this quote, “Kevin O’Leary: No, because in my mandate, I’m invested 100% all the time. My job is to find ways to diversify my risk and reduce volatility. Exchange-traded funds—and particularly new smart-beta or rules-based ETFs—do exactly that.”
